-- Red Decorated (RD) Pieces --

Red Decorated pieces
The Red Decorated pieces were available only during 1936-37.  They were discontinued form production because the red oxide used for decoration w2as poisonous to those applying it during production.  The decoration was designed by Walter Teague.  The only piece in the dealer catalog was a #683, 1 1/2 qt. casserole.  As you can see below there were other pieces produced.
This is #504, a 1+ qt bean pot with lid.  It is odd that a 'bean pot' was decorated to be fancy!  But, Corning decorated all sorts of their kitchenware, evidently thinking that even if the housewife was the only one to see them she would be more happier and prouder with etched or decorated pieces.  This reached its peak in the 1960s and 1970s when Corning produced an almost endless variety of colors and designs in their mixing bowls.

This is a beautiful casserole with the RD decoration.   This is a #623, 1 1/2 qt. round casserole. The other pieces seen here have the familiar 'spray' design etching which was one of the most popular of the Pyrex designs.  We don't know if this has a name, but is a nice, symmetric pattern.

This, too, is a #623, 1 1/2 qt. casserole.  Notice that this casserole is identical to the one above, as they are both #623.  The tops, however, are completely different.  The top in the above casserole can be turned upside down and serve as a hot pad.  The one below has a knob top, easier for removing.

This is a #684, 2 qt. round casserole.   This is a nice and very large casserole.  The combination of Red Decoration and detailed mount makes this a wonderful piece.  The beautiful mount is signed 'Forman Ware Chrome on Brass.'
