Oregon State wins its 3rd CWS title behind a complete game 2-hit shutout pitched
by freshman Kevin Abel in the third and decisive championship game. Abel was
perfect through the last 6.2 innings, retiring the last 20 batters he faced.
Catcher (and future high draft pick?) Adley Rutschman had a total of 13 RBIs
and a series record 17 hits to be named the MVP.
Arkansas won the first game and would have won the second if they hadn't made
a 2 out, 2 ball 2 strike blunder in the top of the 9th. Three players
(1b, 2b, rf) watched a foul ball land between them while they still had a 3-2 lead.
No error was charged, but Arkansas was devastated and Oregon State was energized.
The next pitch resulted in a game-tying single, and a 2-run home run 3 pitches later
proved to be the game winner. Abel also got the W in that game with one inning
of relief in the 8th.
Oregon St [3] takes two to eliminate unseeded Mississippi St.
Arkansas [5] eliminates defending champ Florida [1].
N. Carolina [6] and Texas Tech [9] were eliminated in the third round;
Unseeded Washington and [13] Texas went 0-2 and BBQ.
The standings are organized to reflect the fact that
we have, in effect, a structure identical to a pair of regionals
feeding into a best 2-of-3 super regional for the championship.
The seeding numbers indicate the national seeding of the team in each of the
original Super Regional pairs.
New this year: I put the actual seeding for top 16
teams in square brackets after the name. For details of how these teams
got here, visit my regional results page.
The original seedings have been reordered to reflect results.

Records are from after the Super Regionals, before CWS.
Only the Collegiate Baseball poll was updated after the regionals (on 6/5 and on 6/11).
Baseball America has not updated its poll since 5/28, the end of the regular season.
The ranking
produced by Boyd Nation before regional play (5/28) is
listed under ISR, while that after the Super Regionals is under ISR'.
# indicates the home team because I list these brackets with the higher seed on top. I don't know why Washington and Texas are visitors despite inheriting a higher seed. They must now flip a coin when both teams had been unseeded in the regionals and give the home field based on the original 1-16 seeding in the other cases, unlike what is done for NCAA Basketball where an upset earns an upgrade.
