NCAA Baseball
Conference Rank
1999

Results are complete through regional play.

This is a 'scorecard' by conference for 1999, the first for the new 64-team playoff system where every conference gets an automatic bid.

My original motivation for this summary was the thought that the regionals are a major source of inter-conference and inter-region play that helps one evaluate the relative strength and (possibly) future seedings of teams from various regions and conferences.

Current status:

Here is the 'histogram' of the success rate for the 1999 NCAA regionals.

With the new 64-team system, I now tally a Regional champion under "win" and the super-Regional champion (the team that goes to the CWS) under "champ" so the "champ" column is unchanged from the past.

The comments line includes a summary of the recent "playin" history of the conferences.

  The square-bracketed code on the right records the recent status of
  each conference with regard to whether they automatically qualified a
  team or had to win a best-2-of-3 playin tournament to qualify for the
  tournament. This was done from 1994 to 1998.

  The code is as follows:

   . = automatic qualifier for 1999 and/or previous year
   * = identified as playin teams for 1999 if expansion not approved
   W = qualified by winning playin tournament
   L = lost the playin tournament

For more detail on the playin and NCAA participation history of these conferences and (in some cases) their predicessors, I have a summary page showing which conferences got an automatic bid to the NCAA regionals in the past decade.
