Regional Results
2014

Current status:
Super Regionals are complete, with only 2 national seeds making it to CWS.

New readers should consult a separate page that gives some general background information on the records, polls, RPI, ISR, etc information included in the table below. (An "N" indicates a "national" seed.) As usual, the polls and data are from from Monday, 26 May 2014, when the regional pairings and seedings were announced. Again, many thanks to Boyd Nation for the pseudo-RPI and ISR information generated from his database. We also have the official NCAA RPI available but that information is still only used in my discussion area.

The average (mean) ISR for the field is 111.6, plus or minus a standard deviation of 8.7.
The median ISR is 113.85.

The highest pseudo-RPI ranking without a bid was West Virginia (40), but they had a record barely over 0.500 and were 6th of 9 in conference with a conference record below 0.400. The lowest pseudo-RPI with an at-large bid was Cal State Fullerton (54) along with Clemson (50). The highest ISR without a bid was UCSB (114.2). The lowest ISR with an at-large bid was Old Dominion (110.1), just behind North Carolina (110.2), Clemson (110.3), and Liberty (110.8).

Note: The NCAA identifies the regions only by location, so the region numbering scheme is my own creation, reflecting the seeding of the associated super regional and identifying which of the two paired regionals has a top-8 nationally seeded team. The regional names are also my own, carrying on a tradition started by Craig Gowens (aka the perpetual "Commissioner of the SWC") on Usenet.

Super Regional Summary:

I order these results in almost the same way the NCAA does (they use 1-8, 5-4, 2-7, 6-3), reflecting the pairings in the CWS brackets.

Note: All series start on Friday, 30 May. The order here is by national seed, not by future CWS pairing (which is the 1-8, 5-4, 2-7, 6-3 order used in NCAA brackets) or the seemingly random order resulting from alphabetizing them by the host city.

Related information:

In addition, I include the usual subjective list of "bridesmaid" teams. Several of these were obvious, others stood out in Boyd's rankings, and some were picked to provide perspective. There are none missing with an ISR of 110 or above.

I also have every team with a pRPI of 60 or above, which happens automatically because of the way I prepare to process the bids when they are announced by the NCAA. (I collect the teams in RPI order with their record, ISR numbers, and sometimes the previous week's polls over the weekend before the seeds are announced. Then I just have to sort them into the regional grid and update with any other changes on Monday.) This year I noticed that the seeding was very straightforward. Every one of the teams in the top 3 seeds came from that group of top-60 RPI teams. The #4 seeds were all filled by the usual set of conference champions with lower RPI scores, and there were only two instances where a team with a top-45 pRPI was knocked out of a possible #3 seed, as noted below.

Decisive criteria listed by the NCAA selection committee in the past have included strength of non-conference schedule and performance in the conference tournament in addition to the overall season performance numbers we tabulate here.

Examination of past tournaments suggested that conference finish was undoubtedly the reason every team with a pseudo-RPI high enough to make the field strictly by the numbers (those marked with an "*") was left out by the committee. This is clearly the case for West Virginia (40), who finished 6th of 9 in the Big 12 with a 9-14 conference record. The five teams ahead of them (more than half of the conference) all made it in the tournament.

On the other hand, Mercer (45) finished 2nd to Florida Gulf Coast in the Atlantic Sun conference and neither team made it in after getting knocked out by 3rd place finisher Kennesaw State. The Atlantic Sun is 17th in conference RPI and likely didn't rate the extra bids that it would take for Mercer to get in. With hindsight, maybe one of those teams deserved to get in even though Kennesaw State's success in the NCAA tournament could be attributed to being at the top of its game (blowing through the conference tournament) rather than the overall strength of that conference. We'll have to see if the Atlantic Sun gets the benefit of the doubt next year.

I suspect that Cal State Fullerton (54) was the last team added to the field over Mercer. With a competition record reflected in their 114 ISR (compared to 109 for Mercer), they probably got a subjective nod.
