Current status:
The field for the NCAA College World Series is set!
Texas A&M is the first team to qualify for the CWS.
Four more teams (Notre Dame, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Oklahoma) are in.
All of these 4 teams were unseeded, and Mississippi was unranked
by Baseball America before the regionals!
Texas won the clinching game easily on Sunday after a rain delay.
Stanford and Auburn filled out the field on Monday evening.
Lots of underdogs this year!
Sunday update: The 1-4-5-8 group is pending one more decisive game
that is currently in a weather delay.
The 2-3-6-7 group started Saturday and has produced two sweeps by
underdog teams on Sunday.
The Super Regionals started with the 1-4-5-8 seeds, telling us that those
will be the first pairings in the CWS. That is the same as the last several years.
Polls are from May 30 and will not be updated.
RPI and ISR data are also from Monday, May 30, and appear correct.
New readers should consult a separate page that gives some general background information on the records, polls, RPI, ISR, etc information included in the table below. (An "N" indicates a "national" seed.) As usual, the polls and data are from from Monday, 30 May 2022, when the regional pairings and seedings were announced. Again, many thanks to Boyd Nation for the pseudo-RPI and ISR information generated from his database. [NOTE: The pandemic anomaly of conference-only schedules was limited to 2021.] We also have the official NCAA RPI available but that information is still only used in my discussion area.
The average (mean) ISR for the field is 112.5,
plus or minus a standard deviation of 9.4.
The median ISR is 116.1.
The highest pseudo-RPI ranking without a bid was Clemson (31)
along with NC State (32) and UT San-Antonio (33).
The lowest pseudo-RPI with an at-large bid was Texas Tech (51) #3 in Region 16,
followed by UCLA (47) with a #2 seed and Grand Canyon (45) #3 in Region 7.
The highest ISRs without a bid were NC State (115.3) and Clemson (115.1), so they
are again at the top of the "left out" list. Conference finish and tournament play
likely explains the decision to keep them out and, say,
Florida State (116.0 and pRPI=30) and some lower ones in.
The lowest ISR with an at-large bid was Liberty (114.0 and pRPI=34),
just behind Dallas Baptist (114.5, but pRPI=18) and Mississippi (114.5 and pRPI=37).
The low ISR for Mississippi could also justify its placement at #3 in Region 6.
Note: The NCAA identified the regions only by location, so the region numbering scheme is my own creation, reflecting the seeding of the associated super regional and identifying which of the two paired regionals has a top-8 nationally seeded team. The regional names are also my own, carrying on a tradition started by Craig Gowens (aka the perpetual "Commissioner of the SWC") on Usenet.
Super Regional Summary:
Will appear here after the regionals are over.
Complete Results:
Note: All series start on Friday, 3 June. The order here is by top-8 national seed, not by future CWS pairing (which is the 1-8, 5-4, 2-7, 6-3 order used in NCAA brackets) or the seemingly random order that can result from alphabetizing them by the host city. This year, the NCAA is listing the regional games in the same 1-16, 9-8, 5-12, 11-4, etc ordered used in the past.
Continuing a procedure that started in 2018, the NCAA announced the seeds as 1-16 and lists all 16 seeds on the bracket pdf. Everything is consistent with that, with 1 paired with 16 in my first regional group, 2 playing 15 in my second, etc. Like in basketball, there appears to be no effort to reduce travel challenges and costs for fans wanting to attend a Super Regional based on these pairings.
I use an "N" to indicate teams with a top-8 national seed, which is consistent with what I did before 2018 when the NCAA only announced 8 "National" seeds. Those teams will host and play at home if they advance to the Super Regional.

In addition, I include the usual list of "bridesmaid" teams. Many of these are obvious, standing out in the top 60 of Boyd's rankings that would make a tournament on computerized merit without regard to their performance in a conference or conferenct tournament, while others (like the bottom dozen or so in both rankings or conference runners-up) were picked to provide perspective. There are none missing with an ISR above 110 or a pRPI above 64. I also try to include all of the teams that led their conference in the regular season but lost out in the conference tournament because their conference only rates a single bid, as well as some teams that move in and out of the cellar. You can see how the NCAA thinks the various conferences measure up on my conference ranking page.
Decisive criteria listed by the NCAA selection committee in the past have included strength of non-conference schedule and performance in the conference tournament in addition to the overall season performance numbers we tabulate here.
Examination of past tournaments suggested that conference finish was
undoubtedly the reason teams with a pseudo-RPI high enough to
make the field strictly by the numbers (those marked with an "*")
were left out by the committee.
The situation for the two ACC teams is unclear because a case could be made
for N.C. State over Florida State (both 0.500 in conference play)
based on who they beat during the conference playoffs.
I think the others lost out because of their playoff losses and season record
in a conference that was perceived as being weak. That call seems justified
by the performance of the Conference USA and Southern Conference champs.
There were no at-large teams with a #4 seed to indicate what team might have been the last team added to the field. But it could be Mississippi (37) in Region 6, Grand Canyon (45) in Region 7, or perhaps Coastal Carolina (29) in Region 8. I think it's unlikely that Dallas Baptist (18) in Region 9 was the last team added. All other #3 seeds with a top-8 match-up were conference champions who were automatically in the tournament despite a poor record.

The lowest ISR of an at-large team was 114. * - denotes team with a higher pseudo-RPI than the natural cutoff for a 64-team tournament after 31 automatic bids are used up [39]. This cutoff is much higher than usual (it ranged from 42 to 47 in the "normal" 2010 to 2019 decade) because there were an unusual number of upsets in the conference tournaments this year. Last year (during the pandemic) was the exact opposite with few upsets and a cutoff at 48. ==== =============== ====== ======= == == === === == ===============
