Serving the Emerald Coast

During the past 10,000 years, Northwest Florida has been inhabited by prehistoric peoples of the Paleo, Archaic, Woodland and Mississippian Cultural Traditions. The Indian Temple Mound Museum exhibits artifacts which reflect the technological, spiritual and artistic achievements of these people.

Historic artifacts that highlight European and Colonial exploration and settlement help to tell the history and development of Ft. Walton Beach. Built around 1400 A.D., the Temple Mound was the political and ceremonial center for the large and powerful Mississippian Culture. The mound, located adjacent to the museum is the largest earthwork on salt water. A replica temple now stands atop the mound.

Florida's history is long:  It goes back over 10,000 years to people who hunted mammoth with stone-tipped spears.

It is colorful:  7,000 years ago, Florida's Native Americans wove cloth as fine as a T-shirt.

It is unique in the world:  Over 800 years ago, some Floridians had a civilization so complex that they built long canals for canoes and huge pyramid-shaped mounds of shells and sand.

You can be part of it!  New pages of this story are being written every week. Teams of amateur and professional archaeologists together are making facinating discoveries in the field and in the lab.

You can help save it!  Florida's rapid development puts many valuable sites in jeopardy. Amateur and professional archaeologists, elected officials and planners, and just plain concerned citizens are working together to save this history in the soil.

How do you put yourself into this picture?  By joining the Emerald Coast Archaeology Society (ECAS).
