THE OLD GARRETT HOMESTEADS IN MILLIGAN, FL
These are old photos of the Garrett family around the turn of the previous century.

Carl and I have discussed the picture and it was taken about 1910. That would make John 16 and Rube 14, that "guesstimated" by their size. As adults Rube was maybe two inches taller than John.
The building to the right rear (see image below) is a mystery as the smoke house was on the other side and had no chimney. Meats were smoked by smoking corn cobs etc. in a bucket or tub on the ground. The trees in the front are those that we knew. If you notice the picket fence in front of the house is there. The depth in the pic is confusing as it looks so close to the house.
Pa bought the property from a colored man and rebuilt or remodelled to suit. I figure it was built in early 1900s as they moved from the river house about that time. I recall Uncle Sheridan tell that his grandma (Rebecca Jane Fowler) was near death, so he was sent to school with Johnny and Ruby that day. Grandma died that day and someone came to school and told took them home. I think they still lived on the river when she died, 1905 I think. So in conclusion they had not lived there many years when the pic was taken.
For now
