The spark that ignited the start of what was later to become Marzuq Shrine Temple was delivered by Lewis B. Brantley, Potentate of Morocco Temple on April 4, 1985 at a Legistlative Masonic Breakfast to Joseph L. Gillespie, President of the Tallahassee Shrine Club. Illustrious Sir Lew said, "There ought to be a Temple here in Tallahassee Joe, and I'm going to discuss it with you right after this meeting".
Shortly after this meeting, work began to organize and start collecting signatures. In selecting a temple name, "Marzuq" was chosen because it's meaning fit Tallahassee perfectly, "a place in the hills". 724 signatures were submitted on the first deadline, April 1, 1986, far short of the required 1,000.
At the 113th Imperial Council Session in July 1987, the requirement for charter was lowered to 500 signatures providing all temples within the state would agree to the new temple. Morocco Temple approved our request to form Marzuq and gave us six counties; Gadsden, Jefferson, Lafayette, Leon, Taylor and Wakulla. Letters of support were received from the other nine Temples in the State.
Dispensation was granted on June 30, 1988 at the 114th Imperial Council Session in New Orleans. Membership at that time was 534. The first Units to be chartered were the Bandits, Clowns, Director's Staff and the Motorcycle Escort.
On July 6, 1989 at the 115th Imperial Session in Toronto, Canada, Marzuq Temple received its charter. At a stated meeting on July 20th, Marzuq Temple’s first Divan was elected by its nobility with Imperial Sir Lew Brantley officiating.

Tanner did not seek re-election, and was demitted back to Morocco Temple on February 18, 1991. 27 nobles were created in 1991 and the year ended with a membership of 759, a net gain of 1.1%. On December 23rd, through the personal efforts of Noble Cecil Oswalt, a generous donation of $20,000.00 was made to the Shriners Hospital Transportation Fund by Dr. A. C. McCully, President of the Charles A. Frueauff Foundation.

Oswalt was elected Treasurer for 1993. Noble Warner P. Garrison, Recorder did not seek re-election and returned to his real estate business. Noble Bruce C. High, Jr. was elected Recorder for 1993. Membership again increased by a small margin, making Marzuq one of only seven Temples to see a gain.
The Keystone Kops and Thunderbirds units were chartered in 1993. Noble Bruce C. High resigned in April due to bad health and Noble Warner Garrison was re-elected recorder. There were Twenty-nine creations in 1993. Marzuq Temple played host to Imperial Potentate Richard L. "Tony" Bukey who visited Marzuq Temple on November 18th.
Again, through the efforts of Noble Cecil Oswalt, The Marzuq Temple Transportation Fund received a donation of $25,000.00 from Dr. A.C. McCully and the Charles A. Frueauff Foundation.
R. Michael Sims was elected 1994 Potentate. Among those Nobles who were visited by the Black Camel this year was our beloved brother James A. Pyles, Representative to the Tampa Shriners Hospital and Marzuq Temple’s First Crippled Children’s Chairman. Noble Cecil Oswalt again delivered a check for $25,000.00 from Dr. A.C. McCully making his gift to the Transportation Fund a total of $100,000.00.

Our membership increased over the 800 mark for the first time. The Past Masters and the Oriental Band Units were chartered. The Frueauff Foundation donated again to our Hospital Fund in the amount of $25,000.00 Temple membership at the end of the year was 790, a gain of 29 members.
Claude W. "Buddy" Tooke was elected Potentate for 1997. The Frueauff Foundation once again donated $25,000.00 to Shriners Hospital Fund. Creations for 1997 were small (8), primarily due to the York Rite not having a ceremonial and the Scottish Rite producing only 2 candidates and one reunion.
Marzuq held its 3rd, successful, Screening Clinic in the Spring.
At the Imperial Council Session in St. Louis, Imperial Potentate Lew Brantley honored four Marzuq Nobles with Imperial Appointments; Charles J. Brantley was appointed Imperial Chaplain, Joseph L. Gillespie, P.P., Mallory Horne and Warner P. Garrison were appointed Imperial Ambassadors.

Marzuq Temple continued to grow, though slowly, during 1998 due to an aggressive membership program and fewer visits by the black camel than recorded in prior years. A building site was approved by the membership and preliminary building plans drawn. Most of the hurtles the city addressed have been resolved with hope for a sale in 1999. Shrine membership remains the number one priority, Marzuq grew by 2 members during 1998.
