This
progressive 4 week course is designed to teach new puppy owners how
to effectively communicate with their new charge in a manner the
puppy can understand. Class sizes are kept small to accommodate
individual instruction for each puppy/handler team.
Course
topics include, but are not limited to...
Lectures
on:
Critical
Periods of Canine Development (BF Skinner)
Vaccination
protocol
Diet,
proper grooming, and hygiene, housetraining, crate training
Classical
Conditioning vs. Operant Conditioning techniques
Dog
learning theory and motivational training techniques
Confidence
building, environmental stressors and more
Handler
training:
Teaching
basic behaviors i.e. sit, down, stand for exam, walking nicely on
lead, eye contact/attention, redirection from unwanted behaviors to
acceptable behaviors, and confidence building.
Handlers
are taught proper communication skills with their puppies to
encourage proper bond building which will in turn enhance the
relationship between puppy and handler.
In
addition, discussion and training are provided for any 'issues'
individual pups are going through, i.e. , fear of cars, biting &
nipping, house breaking, cat chasing, house manners, child and bite
safety, etc.
Each
session is approximately 1.5-2 hours, depending upon attendance.
Classes
are held on Saturday mornings at Capital Canine.
