Feeding
- Proper diet (feeding) for your Persian
cat is
as important as proper Veterinary care. It is important to
remember
that a cat (feline) is the perfect carnivore and must be fed meat
products.
It is important to understand that cats do not have a natural tolerance
for dairy products and vegetables.
- Always consult your Veterinarian
for recommendations
on what to feed your cat. Never experiment with a cats diet and
especially
do not change your cats diet because of something you hear or see on
TV.
Trust your Veterinarian and remember that the cat is a carnivore.
-
- Don't List
- 1. Do not feed dairy products unless
they are
fermented. Cats do not tolerate lactose in milk because they do
not
have the enzymes to digest it. They can tolerate dairy products
such
as yogurt, cheese, or sour cream because they provide bacteria that can
digest the lactose. So, if you want to give your cat milk, mix in
a tablespoon of yogurt or sour cream for every 1/2 cup of milk or use
the
lactose-reduced form.
- 2. Do not feed your cat fish, except
as an
occasional treat. A diet of fish can result in a severe lack of
vitamin
E, which can result in severe neurological diseases. Avoid
fish-flavored
food because they have a tendency to cause runny, malodorous stools.
- 3. Do not feed your cat hamburger
because it
usually has too much fat.
- 4. Do not feed your cat liver or
"organ meats"
as a large portion of its regular diet. Organ meats have a high
Vitamin
A & D content that can be "poison" to the cat. Always check
with
your Veterinarian when selecting or changing your cat's diet.
- The idea that cats eat fish or like milk is
a fantasy
perpetuated by popular myth and "Hollywood"!!....(Ahhh, Hollywood!!)
-
- Do List
- 1. Use established Brand Name foods
that your
Veterinarian recommends such as (but not limited to) Iams, Science
Diet,
Pro-Plan, Eukanuba and raw red meat.
- 2. If you use
raw red
meat, be sure to mix it with something else. Meat alone does
not contain enough vitamin E, some B vitamins and calcium to be
sufficient
unto itself. Add one of the dry foods above or mix in some can
food
supplement. The supplement will provide the fiber and nutrients
needed
for a balanced diet.
-
- Note: What Camelot Cats feeds
may not
be best for your cat. Always consult your Veterinarian for
feeding
recommendations for a specific cat; your cat!
- Camelot Cats feeds twice a day. We
feed approximately
1/4 cup of Blue Ridge Beef, kitten grind mixed
with
1/4 cup of either Iams, Science Diet, Pro-Plan or Eukanuba. The
reason
for using the more expensive brands is that we believe the nutrients
are
better absorbed, so that the stool is much more compact and much less
odorous
as a consequence.
