 Grooming

Grooming can be discussed in three separate parts and is limited to grooming of Persian Cats: Show Grooming, Pet Grooming and Cattery Maintenance Grooming.

Show Grooming is the most demanding and time consuming and is specialized to the individual cat being shown.  Bathing is the most important requirement and the frequency of bathing as well as the type of shampoo and conditioner used come in a close second.  Drying is also extreemly important and is the final factor on how the cat looks after its dry as well as how the coat handles later.  Show program cats play and eat and sleep just like the other cats, however, they are watched regularly to make sure that they don't damage the long and somewhat delicate show coat.

Pet Grooming is less demanding and should include some shaving of the undercarrage and below the trunk lid.  Frequency is also important.  You can depend on a dirty Persian rubbing off a lot of hair on the carpet and furniture.  A rule of thumb is that if you don't wash your Persian Cat you get a free Persian rug....and furniture!  Bathing should be done at least once a month, either at home or by a groomer.  Use a degreaser shampoo such as Dawn dish soap diluted with 3 parts water and wash, rinse, wash again and rinse again and then wash at least one more time to get the fur and skin clean.  Camelot Cats has never experience skin problems on a cat in the show program, only cattery cats which are washed the least often.  Show cats in our show program are washed very often and do not have any dry skin problems from the washing.  Usually, the problem that surfaces, is that the cat is greasy and the washing did not get it clean.

Cattery maintenance grooming is usually based on efficiency and keeping the cat clean and in good health.  Cats can be and usually are shaved down to remove unwanted hair which takes time to clean and groom.  A Persian with a "Poodle Cut" is much easier to keep clean and only needs bathing about once a month or every 6 weeks.  The shampoo used is usually selected for its cleaning and disenfecting qualities.  Anti fungal and anti bacterial shampoos are used as well as Dawn.  Great care is directed on healthy skin and a nice looking coat is ignored; especially since most of the cattery cats have been shaved.
