Leon County Extension Trial Garden Report

These are Master Gardener observations and ratings for 1995 to 1997 trial garden performance. Performance may be different under different conditions and in differerent years. Ratings are overall evaluations by Master Gardeners on a scale of 0 to 6, worst to best. Height and width are highest measured during trial, in inches.

Achillea decolorans 'Garden Mace'

1996 6 Spicy aroma, planted after blooming cycle, but performs as a hardy ground cover. 8 42

1997 3 Very vigorous, excellent ground cover, good dark green color, a few tiny white blooms in 10 60

September, started thinning in October.

Achillea millefolium 'Paprika' (Common Yarrow)

1995 5 Attractive paprika-red blooms peaked in April and May and continued sporatically through 21 39

August. Foliage feathery, attractive mint green.

Achillea spp. 'Schnellenberg' (Yarrow)

1995 6 Showy, pale yellow blooms from mid-April, peaking in May and continuing through the summer. 33 36

Healthy attractive plant, good for dried flowers.

1996 3 Pale yellow blooms in June and July. Old growth needed trimming back. Plant was healthy but 24 24

unimpressive.

Agastache foeniculum (Anise Hyssop)

1995 4 Small lavender spikes, began in June, best in August, ended in October. Plant went to seed and 36 30

died. Good for butterflies, short period of good growth habit.

Agastache mexicana 'Toronjii Morado'

1997 3 Small lavender blooms from June to August. Healthy, looked good all summer. 17 14

Alcea rosea 'Country Garden Mix' (Hollyhock)

1996 4 Newly planted. 8 11

1997 3 Did not bloom, completely died back by 10/20. 33 60

Allium schoenoprasum (Chives)

1995 2 Tubular long leaf foliage, stayed healthy and luscious through the summer, declined to yellow 12 14

and spindly in fall.

Allium spp. (Wild onion)

1995 2 Did not bloom during observation period, overall health was poor with brown foliage. 28 23

Alternanthera spp. 'Wave Hill'

1995 6 Non-blooming, but colorful burgundy foliage, fast growing and aggressive, needing frequent 28 42

pruning, but makes a nice accent.

Alyssum spp. 'Snow Crystals'

1995 5 Small white blooms in early spring, plant died in August. 8 36

Amsonia tabernaemontana (Texas Bluestar)

1995 2 Short bloom period. Two short cycles of satisfactory performance. April because of blooms, 24 19

Aug.when plant look best (with a lot of new growth).

Anemone japonica 'elegans' (Japanese Anemone)

1995 3 Did not bloom, heavily attacked by sucking and chewing insects, foliage blemished and leggy at 18 39

best.

Anemone vitifolia 'Robustissima' (Windflower)

1995 6 Rose-mauve blooms started in mid-September and lasted a month, attractive medium dark green 26 56

foliage looks good almost year round.

Anethum graveolens (Dill)

1995 4 Did well in spring but did not survive the summer, would have made showy accent or landscape 48 12

plant.
