These are Master Gardener observations and ratings for 1995 to 1997 trial garden performance. Performance may be different under different conditions and in differerent years. Ratings are overall evaluations by Master Gardeners on a scale of 0 to 6, worst to best. Height and width are highest measured during trial, in inches.

1996 6 Purple, 1 inch tubular blooms through the summer and sporatically in the fall. Green elongated 30 45

foliage, healthy and beautiful.

Anthriscus cerefolium (Salad Chervil)

1995 3 Short lived, did not survive summer. 4.5 7

Arachis glabrata (Perennial Peanut)

1997 5 Beautiful yellow little pea-like flowers from mid-May to September. Healthy throughout the trial, 7 34

vigorous spreading, good ground cover for sunny area.

Artemisia abrotanum (Southernwood)

1995 3 Performed best in summer, pretty leaves, minor fungus problems. 22 43

Artemisia lactiflora 'Guizho' (White Mugwort)

1996 2 Plant declined in shade plot, was blooming when planted, but did not bloom again. Some bug 40 14

damage, small, not impressive.

1997 2 Never bloomed, was beautiful plant in early spring, but was damaged by snails and dry weather 8 22

. Died out suddenly in August.

Artemisia ludoviciana 'Valerie Finnis' (Artemisia)

1995 4 Worthy of planting for silver foliage. Plant died in October, but lasted over two years. 15 54

Asclepias curassavica 'Silky Gold' (Milkweed)

1995 0 Looked dead in early April.

1996 3 Newly planted in fall. 12 10

Aster divaricatus (white wood aster)

1997 5 Tiny white blooms September to November. Healthy throughout trial, bloom stalks fell over, 22 25

otherwise beautiful.

Aster laevis (Smooth Aster)

1995 2 Bloomed in June and again in August, problems with foliar fungus, healthy new growth after 24 22

pruning.

Aster novae-angliae 'Hella Lacy' (New England Aster)

1997 4 Small purple daisy blooms in June and rebloomed in September. Healthy except for chewed 22 30

leaves in May.

Aster novae-angliae 'Purple Dome'

1995 2 Poor performance this year. 8 8

Aster novi belgii 'Alert' (New York Aster)

1995 5 Lavender blooms with yellow centers from June through September, trouble free plant, with 11 11

colorful flowers and colorful foliage.

Aster spp. 'Hardy Purple'

1995 4 Graduated pink flowers darker on top; sparse blooming; peak bloom in September 24 34

Aster tataricus 'Jin dai' (Tatarian Aster)

1995 0 Plant did not survive slug damage.

Asteromea mongolica (Japanese Aster)

1995 6 White and lavender blooms from mid-May to July, easy prolific bloomer, long lasting, real pretty 28 36

until end of August.

1996 4 Pale pink flowers with yellow centers from June through August. Medium green, feathery 20 27

foliage. Slight fungus problem, otherwise remained healthy.

Astilbe chinensis 'Pumila' (Chinese Astilbe)

1995 3 Very low creeping groundcover, did not bloom, declined during summer and went dormant in 1.5 24

October.
