These are Master Gardener observations and ratings for 1995 to 1997 trial garden performance. Performance may be different under different conditions and in differerent years. Ratings are overall evaluations by Master Gardeners on a scale of 0 to 6, worst to best. Height and width are highest measured during trial, in inches.

Stachytarpheta jamaicensis 'Pink' (Porterweed)

1996 4 Planted in full bloom in August 1996, stayed in bloom with pink flowers on spikes. Bloomed 19 33

through October then started to decline.

Stokesia laevis 'Klaus Jelitto' (Stoke's Aster)

1995 0 Purple blooms in May and early June, plant declined in the summer and was in poor condition the 22 24

rest of the season, rated a flat zero.

Tagetes lucida (Texas Tarragon)

1995 4 Small yellow blooms in October and November, nice green vertical clump. 38 36

1995 4.8 Intense long lasting yellow blooms from mid-Oct. to Nov. Some problems with stem breakage 23 43

early in season, but low maintenance requirements. Fragrant tarragon substitute.

Tagetes signet 'Gnome' (Marigold)

1995 3.6 Yellow-gold blooms from March to May, but plant declined rapidly and died within two months of 11 9

being planted out.

Thermopsis caroliniana (false lupine)

1997 0 Declined after first month, no blooms. 29 25

Thunbergia grandiflora

1995 5 Vine of large lavender trumpet flowers, bloomed heavilly from August to mid-October, plant 96

considered attractive but requires a large area.

Thymus vulgaris (English Thyme)

1995 1 Very weak growth, dead by August. 5 7

Tibouchina semidecondra 'Athens Blue'

1995 5 Purple blooms in mid summer, pretty foliage, recommended. 48 54

1996 3 Never bloomed, bright green erect foliage added texture to landscape. Some problems with inch 15.5 14.5

worms.

Trachelospermum spp. (Arabian Jasmine)

1996 5 Delicate white blossoms continued from June through October. Deep green plant seems hardy 30 25

and would do better if not shaded and dwarfed by other plants.

Tricyrtis x amethystima (Toad Lily)

1995 4 Purple and white speckled flowers bloomed in late October through November, foliage attractive 26 32

dark stalks contrasting with lighter leaves, but not remarkable.

1996 5 Vigorous healthy growth, beautiful purple blooms from mid October through November. 29 60

Interesting plant with pretty leaves.

Turnera ulmifolia (Buttercup)

1996 6 Yellow flowers from summer thru fall, beautiful large healthy plant with wonderful color. 36 60

Turnera ulmifolia 'Buttercup'

1997 5 Bloomed with 3 inch butter yellow hibiscus-like flowers from June to November. Leggy, 45 56

sprawling but healthy.

Verbena hybrid 'Homestead Red'

1995 5 Planted in March, spectacular bright red blooms from April thru July, fast growing and healthy 15 64

until late summer.
