Goodwood Museum and Gardens, Inc. is a public charity created to restore the historic Goodwood estate as a museum and garden available to the public. To find out more about this project, go to the Goodwood Homepage, which was created by Joe Clark. The Goodwood website will be updated over the coming weeks and we will be adding lots of information about Goodwood events and volunteer activities.

I have been working with the Goodwood staff to research heirloom plants to try to recreate the gardens as they may have looked during the early years. The garden master plan has not been completed yet, but the intent is to create separate garden areas to represent the various owners of the property from 1830 to the 1920's.

One of the owners of the property was Senator Willliam C. Hodges, who purchased the property in 1925. Little is known about the gardens he created at Goodwood, but we do know he had an interest in tropical plants, and he built an aviary for his collection of tropical birds. One of my assignments as a Goodwood volunteer is to research the availability of tropical and tropical looking plants that were introduced into the trade in the 1920's or before.
