SPARC is very active in emergency communications and all hams are invited to participate. A good place to find out what is involved in emergency communications is www.emergency-radio.org . There are now some qualifications that must be met in order to take an active part in an actual communication event. Information to obtain the necessary qualifications can be found at http://training.fema.gov/IS/NIMS.asp. This is web based self taught course and it is free. Another option is www.arrl.org/cep/student. This is also a web based course that is not free but is structured for the students benefit and has help from a real person if needed. For general Amateur Radio and training information look at http://www.arrl-nfl.org. This has more information on training, and how to get it can be found on http://www.arrl-nfl.org/training.html
It is very important for anyone who is interested in emergency communications to get started well before a need arises. The necessary qualifications must be obtained and you must get registered. For more information please contact Doug, K4GKJ,k4gkj@arrl.net It is recomended to read the Wakulla County ARES Emergency Plan and download it if desired. |
