Roleplaying

Dungeons & Dragons

If you are interested in joining our gaming group, here is some information you might want to know.

The “group” actually consists of two campaigns — one that is already ongoing, and one that is just starting. There is no reason the two campaigns have to have 100% player overlap; if you’re only interested in one, you’re not required to join the other. Both games will run on weekend afternoons, with the ongoing game running 2-3 times a month (sometimes Saturday, sometimes Sunday), and the new game alternating with it (probably mostly on Saturdays).

About Our Group and What We Want in New Players

We welcome players with any level of experience. Our current players are mostly experienced, with a couple of “novices” (I qualify that word for a reason — my wife, for example, still considers herself a novice, even though she’s been gaming since the World of Darkness craze of the late 90s.). So, it doesn’t matter to us if you’re new to this, or if you’ve been playing games since Chainmail was all the rage.

Our current group is all people in their late 20s or older. Some of the players who just left were a bit younger (mid 20s), and they fit in fine. We would welcome mature players of any age. To be honest, I don’t think any of us are looking forward to adding a 14-year-old to the group. But we aren’t going to reject someone on the basis of age, either, if they seem like they’d fit in and have fun.

In terms of style, we are a mix. Some of us are very heavy roleplayers. Some are just the opposite — very combat oriented. We make it work. So, no matter what you’re gaming style, I think you’ll be welcomed here.

Our group works because we have a simple philosophy: gaming is fun, and we are here to have fun. We don’t take this too seriously. No one is going to yell at you to be in character all the time or else. If you are that intense, we might not be for you. On the other hand, we do actually like to play. If you are going to be disruptive — perhaps by being militantly anti-roleplaying, or maybe by being loudly bored when we are solving a puzzle or stragtegizing — we probably aren’t for you. If you just want to have fun, and play some games, and maybe eat some pizza, you'll probably enjoy playing with us (the pizza is even optional).

The Ongoing Game

The ongoing game is a D&D (edition 3.5) campaign. It has been going on for a long time — I only joined about six months ago, so I’m not sure how long. There are no plans to switch it over to the upcoming 4th edition.

My friend Charles runs this game. The page on his campaign is here. Specifically, information for prospective players (including his contact info) is here (I'll warn you though — the site hasn’t been updated in a while, so the information for new players is out of date.).

Charles’ game lost three longtime players to attrition over the past year, but only gained one (me); so he’s down to three players, and would like to add 1-3 more. His style as a DM emphasizes roleplaying less than mine does, so people lighter on the roleplaying should check him out.

The New Game

The new game will be started by me, and is going to initially be an experiment. For many years, I’ve mixed ideas from the defunct RPG Fantasy Wargaming into my games. finally, I decided, "What the hell, why not try playing the game?" So, I'm going to. Fantasy Wargaming only ever existed in one edition, and was never widely played. So, this is for a laugh. I don’t know how far we’ll get. We may decide at some point that the rules are too awful to continue. We may all love it (unlikely — it died for a reason). This is just a fun experiment with an obscure RPG. If you need more info, check out my page on Fantasy Wargaming

After that, I’d like to experiment with an eclectic mix of games — stuff I’ve been meaning to play, but never got around to. Probably, we ’ll all find something we like well enough to make a campaign out of.

At the present time, I only have 2 players committed to Fantasy Wargaming, and I'd like 6-ish. The planned start date for this game is the May 17th or 18th. My style is a little more rolepaying-heavy that Charles’ is, so people who are more into roleplaying should sign up. Contact me here if you haven’t already.
