Dixie Region
Solo II (Autocross) Events

Solo II events are held one Sunday every month at the old airport terminal parking lot, located on Capital Circle SW about a half mile to the northwest of the main Tallahassee airport terminal entrance. Look for the orange cones.

Autocross is a timed competition, not a race. It is a great way to have fun while learning more about the capabilities of your car in a controlled environment. Since cars "compete" against similar cars in their class, you do not have to have a powerful sports car to come out and play. The "stock" rules severely limit what you can do to make a car run faster, making this an economical way to get involved in competitive motorsports.

Regional Solo II autocross events are held one Sunday every month at the old airport terminal parking lot, located on Capital Circle SW about 1 mile to the northwest of the main Tallahassee airport terminal entrance. Look for the orange cones. Up-to-date schedule information, and sometimes the announcement flyer for the next event, is posted on the booth we use as a timing hut.

Registration is normally from 9:00 to 10:30 with runs starting at 11:00 and continuing until mid afternoon. Each car gets 4-6 runs depending on the number of entries and the length of the course.

The premier event of the local club is the Allies -vs- Axis competition held in early December (near Pearl Harbor day!), which counts for double points in the annual standings. This often attracts people from other parts of the SE Division, particularly from the nearby Wiregrass and Central Florida regions. (The concept is that the results of the various class competitions are scored based on whether an Allied or Axis vehicle won, which leads to a some friendly team-like rivalries.)

SCCA Solo II events give you a chance to drive your car the way the engineers intended it to be driven, exploring its limits in the controlled environment of a miniature road course marked with traffic cones.

This is as much fun as it looks, and you don't have to have a B-Stock Mazda RX-7 like this one belonging to Brian Flanagan of Chattanooga, TN, to join in. Locally we have people driving everything from classic sports cars to pickup trucks. If it is safe to drive, there is a class for you to run it in.

You can also experience the fun of autocross competition by coming out and getting involved by helping with timing and scoring, or as a corner worker. If you are a fan of auto racing, you will appreciate it much more after getting involved at the grassroots level of SCCA Solo II or Solo I.
