Law and Order

Law as we know it is mostly absent in the 11th century. There is no premise of all men being equal, or of any kind of fairness. The concepts of due process, habeas corpus, presumption of innocence, and protection from self-incrimination or unfair search and seizure are wholly alien. There are written laws, to be sure. They are not, however, the ostensibly fair, just, and all-encompassing system we know in the modern era. Law is, literally, the will of the lord who has power in the area.
