Wizards

Above the wise-woman in the social spectrum is the wizard. This is not an analog of the D&D wizard. Instead, the wizard is a peddler of spells. Most often, he travels the land, selling charms against the evil eye, removing curses (or placing them), telling fortunes, and amusing crowds with sleight of hand and illusion. The wizard may be of middle class origins (i.e., a townsman), or he may be a former cunning-man who has broadened his repertoire. The wizard uses much of the peasant lore of the wise-woman, but has mixed in elements of “high” magic. He may know a little astrology, for example, or study magical tomes. Like the wise-woman, though, he is still focused on the how of magic, not the why.
